One major problem a lot of homes face is condensation and mould problems on their windows and sills. There are two main things that contribute to this; organic food sources and moisture/condensation.

Moisture [condensation] is caused by lack of airflow in the home and temperature of the space. The humidity in a home plays a large part and is why it is important to use fans and open windows to allow air flow in the home. In bathrooms and kitchens always run fans during and after bathing or cooking. Open windows if possible as well. Use dehumidifiers where necessary too.

Another task to add to your daily routine is opening your window treatments during the day to increase the airflow within the window. Heavy drapery or thick non-breathing blinds or layered window treatments do not allow adequate airflow while closed. Draw, tilt or lift them open daily to increase the airflow.

Remove standing water to prevent absorption into the frames & sills. Use high gloss paint on your window sills to help with cleaning and help protect or prevent moisture and water to be absorbed.

One thing you may not know or be aware of is how exactly mould forms. Mould needs an organic food source and moisture. An organic food source is derived from a plant or animal such as paper, wood or cardboard. When moisture is added for an extended period of time, mould starts to form.

Windows now a days come in a couple different materials other than wood, such as vinyl and aluminum so you may be asking how you still find mould growing on these sources since they are not made of plant or animal components. Well the answer is, unless you clean your windows and sills regularly, your window sills are covered in organic debris such as skin cells, pollen, animal dander, dust mites, insect fragments, etc. This plus moisture contributes to a great feeding ground for mould. Simply by cleaning your window sills regularly, you will be taking a step in controlling and prevention of mould growth.

Should you need to clean minor mould from your windows, detergent and water will suffice. You don't really need anything else. Do not use Bleach, Chlorine or harsh chemicals that can damage your surface.

So remember... think clean and air flow to control and prevent mould growth and protect not only your windows but also your health and air quality which also helps prevent health issues such as asthma, allergies and cold symptoms. Also don't forget to open up your windows by pulling back drapes, tilting or lifting your blinds or by opening your window so air can flow through.
